Downloading, Installing, and Running Putty for the First Time
Go get the client:
Download for your
OS that you are using; i.e. Windows 64 bit
After the file has downloaded, run and install it. I find that that the defaults are good for the install.
Once you are installed and opened/ran, we can get to adding a server.
On the left hand side in ‘Category’, you should have defaulted to ‘Session’
On the right hand side, in the Host Name (or IP address)
-
Enter ‘citstudent.lanecc.edu’ (without quotes) into the Host Name box
Make sure the ‘Connection Type’ has SSH selected
In the ‘Port’ section make sure it is -or- enter ‘22’ (without quotes)
-
In ‘Saved Sessions’
Enter ‘citstudent’ (without quotes)
On the right hand side of the box you should see the ‘Load’, ‘Save’ and ‘Delete’ buttons. Click on ‘Save’
-
You should now see citstudent in the list
-
At the bottom, you should see the ‘About’, ‘Help’, ‘Open’ and ‘Cancel’ buttons. Click on ‘Open’
You should see a new box named ‘citstudent.lanecc.net – PuTTY’ and inside that box should be ‘login as:’
-
The ‘User’ will be your last name and the first initial of your first name with the last 3 of your L number.
You should see ‘user@citstudent.lanecc.edu’s password:’ come up next (‘user’ should echo what you placed in the previous line
-
The ‘Password’ is your password that the instructor gave you.
