Downloading, Installing, and Running Putty for the First Time

  1. Go get the client:
    Download for your OS that you are using; i.e. Windows 64 bit

  2. After the file has downloaded, run and install it. I find that that the defaults are good for the install.

  3. Once you are installed and opened/ran, we can get to adding a server.
    1. On the left hand side in ‘Category’, you should have defaulted to ‘Session’
    2. On the right hand side, in the Host Name (or IP address)


  4. Enter ‘citstudent.lanecc.edu’ (without quotes) into the Host Name box
    1. Make sure the ‘Connection Type’ has SSH selected
    2. In the ‘Port’ section make sure it is -or- enter ‘22’ (without quotes)


  5. In ‘Saved Sessions’
    1. Enter ‘citstudent’ (without quotes)
    2. On the right hand side of the box you should see the ‘Load’, ‘Save’ and ‘Delete’ buttons. Click on ‘Save’


    3. You should now see citstudent in the list


    4. At the bottom, you should see the ‘About’, ‘Help’, ‘Open’ and ‘Cancel’ buttons. Click on ‘Open’
  6. You should see a new box named ‘citstudent.lanecc.net – PuTTY’ and inside that box should be ‘login as:’


    1. The ‘User’ will be your last name and the first initial of your first name with the last 3 of your L number.
  7. You should see ‘user@citstudent.lanecc.edu’s password:’ come up next (‘user’ should echo what you placed in the previous line


    1. The ‘Password’ is your password that the instructor gave you.
