Cisco Netacad Packet Tracer Downloads for Windows 10

- In order to utilize the PT (Packet Tracer) downloads that Cisco Netacad uses, you must first have the most recent version of Java downloaded and installed.

Java Download

- link to java download

- Next login to your Netacad account and go to whatever quiz, exam, or assessment you are on that uses PT downloads. It should be noted that not every assignment on Netacad has a PT download associated with the assignment.

- When you open the quiz or assessment it should automatically begin the download of the executable and should look something like this…

- It is highly recommended that you use Firefox in order to use these PT files. Please note that I am using Google Chrome, but if you use this, Microsoft Edge, or any browser other than Firefox, you will have to follow these steps every time you download a file in order to use the PT files on the assessments.

- Click keep, and find the file in file explorer, usually under downloads.

-

-Right click on the file and click “open with” then click “Choose another app”.

-

- Then click “More Apps”…

-

- and scroll all the way down the list of apps to find the “Look for another app on this PC” and click on it.

-

- You should then see a window similar to this…

-

- At this point, navigate to

 < C:\Program Files(x86)\Java\jre_<version>\bin\javaws >

- It should then ask you if you wish to run this file, click run.

-

- PT should then open and ask for a login. Once you login, the loading bar that says “Packet Tracer Initializing” should complete, then the Start Assessment button should be usable.

-

Setting Browser to run file instead of save

Chrome

- Due to security reasons, versions of Chrome 72 and onward do not allow file type associations. The browser will not allow you to run executable files without downloading.

Microsoft Edge

- As with Chrome, Microsoft Edge will not allow you to associate a file type with an action.

Firefox

- In the top right of the browser window just underneath the X, you should see three horizontal lines opening the preferences menu. Click on this then find the Options button.

-

- Clicking options should bring up this window…

-

- From this page, scroll down until you reach the Files and Applications section. Underneath Applications you should see a window with file type on the left, and the actions you want to take upon opening on the right.

-

- To select a specific action for a file type, simply click the arrow to the right, and select the application you wish to open that specific file type.
